only half salary of the acting office, to an amount greater
than the pay of my present office by 20%. I may reasonably
hope, if acting appointments are open to me, to do as well in
the next five years. If I am to be deprived of the opportunity,
I ought, I must respectfully submit to be compensated by an in-
creased rate of pay to begin with and by periodical increases.
6. I understood when my appointment was under consi-
deration that His Excellency the Governor contemplated the
salary of the office being $420 or $450 a month to begin with
instead of $370. I was under the impression that this was His
Excellency's recommendation to the Secretary of State. May I
beg of His Excellency to submit the matter for the further con-
sideration of the Secretary of State, and ask him in considera-
tion of the very great increase in the work and responsibility
of the Post Master General since the present rate of pay was
fixed, to increase the permanent salary to at least $450 a month
and to grant me, in consideration of the heavy work imposed on
me in reorganising a totally disorganised department, and of
the restriction he now desires to place on me, and which will
seriously affect my probable income, to grant me a small annual
increase, during the next five years, bringing the salary of
the appointment up to $500 a month.
